Online Counselling Across Australia
Evidence-based telehealth counselling with a registered counsellor. No waitlist and no referral needed.
Online counselling with a registered counsellor, wherever you are in Australia. Sessions run over Google Meet. I'm based on the Gold Coast, and it doesn't matter whether you're in Burleigh or three states away. My work is grounded in research about what helps people change. You can read about my qualifications and experience on the Meet Jas page.
Does online counselling work?
The research says it does.
A review of studies by Fernandez and colleagues in 2021 looked at counselling delivered by video. People improved, and their results matched face-to-face therapy. A review by Batastini and colleagues in 2020 found the same thing. Video sessions produce the same outcomes as sitting in a room together.
The research is clear on one more thing. Counselling runs on the relationship between you and your counsellor. Researchers call this the therapeutic alliance. A 2024 review found this relationship builds just as strongly over video as it does in person. So telehealth counselling is not a lesser version of the real thing. It is the real thing, without the commute.
What is online counselling?
Online counselling is regular counselling delivered by secure video call. You'll also hear it called telehealth counselling or e-counselling. The counselling itself is the same as sitting in a room together. You talk with a qualified counsellor about what's going on for you. You're heard without judgement. You learn tools and ways of understanding yourself that you carry into your life. The only difference is where you sit while it happens.
How is counselling different from talking to a friend?
Counselling is different from a chat with a friend. It's a structured, confidential relationship with someone trained to help you work through what's in front of you. And it's different from crisis support. Counselling is steady, ongoing work rather than emergency help.
I'm a person-centred counsellor. You set the direction and I walk alongside you. I work in a trauma-informed way, so we go gently and you stay in control. I pay attention to the nervous system, because your body carries stress as much as your mind does. And I keep things practical. You'll leave sessions with tools you can use between them.
Each of these approaches has research behind it. None of them involves lying on a couch while someone nods silently.
What counselling approach do I use?
What happens in a session?
Sessions run for 50 minutes on Google Meet. We start with a check-in about how you're travelling. Then we work on what matters to you that day. Sometimes that's talking something through until it loosens. Sometimes it's learning a practical tool, like a grounding technique. Sometimes it's sitting with a feeling that needs room. We close gently, so you're not walking straight from a big moment back into your day.
Your first session is about getting comfortable. I'll ask what's brought you here and what you'd like from our work together. You don't need to prepare anything. You don't need the right words either. We find them together.
My areas of practice
Is online counselling right for you?
I help clients untangle their thoughts and feelings and understand themselves better. Online counselling means we do that over a screen instead of across a room. The research above says the screen doesn't get in the way. What online sessions remove are the barriers that stop people starting at all. No travel. No waiting rooms. No juggling work and kids to get across town. You also see me every single session. The evidence is clear that a steady, continuous relationship is where change happens. If you'd prefer support in person, I also offer home visits across the Gold Coast. One honest note as well. Online counselling is not a crisis service. If you're in immediate danger or need urgent support, call 000, or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Ready when you are
You don't need the right words before you start. Finding them is something we do together. The research says the relationship we build along the way is central to what helps. When you're ready, book a session or get in touch.
